More water will really help

It is winter now in Zambia, which is a dry, cooler time without rain.

Changu has reported that they had good crops of winter maize and okra but that other crops are underperforming partly due to lack of water. So we really hope the borehole, we are fundraising for, will improve the situation. We are working as hard as we can with Chibombo People's Climate Action (CPCA) to get everything in place so that work can start on the borehole as soon as possible.

The group who visited Chibombo last September are from Water for Kids , an NGO of Environmental Health Officers with experience of funding boreholes in Zambia. It is invaluable having them to advise CPCA, especially Yona an Environmental Health Officer living and working in Zambia.

They have got their biochar machine up and running; it is really smoky - should our ambition for 2024 be to enable them to use all that sun for solar energy?

£1011 raised by great Friends fundraisers so far this June!

We are hugely grateful to our newest Friend, Kirsten Lamb, who made £145 selling second-hand books at the Whalley Range Celebrate Festival.

Congratulations to Mel on his 70th birthday which he celebrated in style at a party at the inspirational Platt Fields Market Garden What an excellent choice for someone who is thinking global and acting local! If you live in or near Manchester and don't know it, it is well worth a visit. It was so wonderful to see

the flourishing gardens and hear about the abundant community projects making it happen.

Mel asked for people to give donations to CPCA rather than presents. Donations are still arriving: his generous friends have so far given an amazing £536!

Mel is an invaluable Friend to CPCA. He read up on Zambian governance rules and advised Changu when writing CPCA's constitution and has raised £1000 for CPCA so far this year through his energy survey and advice service which he does in exchange for a donation to us.

Happy Birthday Mel and huge thankyou for all you do - wishing you and Mary abundant health and happiness

Great Friends also contribute a fantastic £430 in regular monthly contributions

We are on target!

So far this year we have raised £5273. so, with your help, if we can continue at this rate we will hit our £10,000 target. There will be more information about how we raise money and where it goes at the social on the 4th July and you can read more here

Great ideas for future fundraising and telling people about the project

include:

Buying 10 cards and asking friends to take one on a pay what you want basis and donating the money collected.

Kirsten has offered to do another secondhand bookstall in aid of CPCA. If you know of an event where she could do it (in the Manchester area), please let us know.

Jan from the Carlton Club garden will co-ordinate another cake sale at Rummage on the Range on 5th August, so please get baking!

And if you haven't booked for our social on 4th July, please - book here!
