Life was very tough in Chimbombo in 2020 with local cases of Covid, school closures, drought followed by floods and the Zambian economy going into freefall on account of horrendous debt.
Regardless, the community has continued to work together. The women's group has gone from strength to strength. They rented some land to grow food for home consumption and for sale.
In October they asked for support to buy land so they have somewhere secure. Whalley Range Climate Action Group donated funds which enabled them to go ahead.
Inspired by the tree planting last year, teachers planted 1800 tree saplings, during the Christmas holidays .
2021 has started even tougher. Two teachers at the school died of Covid, and the school has had to lay off teachers, including Chengu. More floods devestated the crops.
We were able to step in again and provide members of the women's group with food for a month and fertiliser in the hope that they can plant and will be supporting themselves again within six weeks.
The group has picked themselves up again and spent the last weekend of January treeplanting and celebrating Changu's 39th birthday.
